hidden in plain sight

14 minutes live reading of script accompanying film screening

This film work was originally accompanied by a live reading of the original accompanying script. The re-enacted scenes based closely on selected scenes from Robert Bresson’s celebrated film PickPocket (1959) focus on fragments of action where the protagonist is rehearsing and performing the use of sleight of hand necessary for the successful pickpocket.  The actor cast to read the text at each staging of this work was a young man whose appearance and suit bore a relation to the central protagonist of the film.

An introduction read by myself before the start of the work situated the work in the context in relation to the aftermath of the 2008 financial crash and its revelation of he routine use of mis-direction and sleight of hand by international finance.

EXHIBITION: Originally commissioned by Centre d’art et photographie de Lectoure and subsequently shown at Deptford X, The Photographers Gallery, London & Or Gallery, Vancouver.
